Emerging Issues of Sociology

Race and Ethnicity

In my first chapter about race and ethnicity, it gives several types of discrimination that are targeted against a certain group of people. Today there are still problems regarding race around the world. One current and close to home for Americans is the hostility against Arabs and Jews in the Middle East. This goes along with government parties in Germany that won the election in 1998 but was considered a “right wing racist party.”  In Italy they have been trying to deal with the increase of undocumented immigrants coming in from Tunisia and some feel this is an act of racism. There have been acts of violence against African farm workers in southern Italy that left several people injured. In England, there have been bombs exploded in areas of ethnic minority. In all corners of the world people are still finding reasons to exploit hatred towards certain ethnic groups. We have seen this behavior for centuries and will continue to live in a world that sees people color and not their heart.

Gender

The gender chapter ties in with discrimination as well but is directed more specifically towards whether you’re female or male. Today women are intentionally forced in less working condition, less pay for hard labor, or sexually abused.  All of over the world women and children are the poorest population. Sex trafficking is an issue for young women that are used to sell their bodies for sex. An estimated 600,000 women and children are trafficked across international borders each year. Some common areas are in Asia, Latin America, and Europe. One other very sad situation that happens to women is female genital mutilation. This is altering women’s sex organs for no medical purpose. These procedures often can cause severe bleeding, problems urinating, and childbirth complications. An estimated 100 to 140 million girls between infancy to 15 years old are targets of female genital mutilation. Most of the population comes from many areas within Africa. All of these cases are just a few that persecute women and make the inferior to men. There are several organizations that help in the prevention of these horrible acts worldwide and provide more information if you're interested.

Religion and Sexuality

Sexuality used to be thought as something conservative but today it’s thrown in your face everywhere you go. In the media, its portrayed in commercials, T.V. programs, and even the way we dress. Abortion seems to be a heated topic today. Worldwide it is usually seen in developed countries and restricted in undeveloped countries. This has to do more with religions like Muslim and Catholicism. In Peru, Chile, and Brazil the abortion rate is higher than in countries that have it on demand. Abortions have dropped in the United States because of birth control being available. Other issues like homosexuality can be seen as something that is “controlled.” Certain religions believe that being a homosexual can be prayed away. There have been debates whether gays should receive the death penalty in Kampala, Uganda. This was tested in the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in 2009. They believed that is wasn’t natural but a lifestyle that was seen in Western civilization, America, and was desired. Many Christian’s were in favor of this bill to save the concept of traditional family. In the U.S. we have a mixed culture of liberals and conservatives. It is slowly emerging more towards liberals but this is not seen in other parts of the world. They keep to traditional beliefs probably because they are surround by the culture they grew up in, whereas the U.S. is diverse. Religion seems to be a key role in people's belief system.

Chapter 13: Families and Religion

This chapter hits home for me because I came from a broken home. I was raised with religion and went to private school for a majority of my schooling. I lived with my grandparents for most of my life. In their house, religion was an everyday reminder of how my views were completely different than my own family's.
Most of the people closest to me are my friends that I have known for years. Some of those people are homosexual. My visual represents a modern day celebrity that has touched many people's lives yet is gay. Our society is starting to change their views on homosexuality and this is also expressed in my newspaper article regarding President Obama. The video is an aspect that I am not familiar with but am deeply saddened by this catastrophic event. It is a child abuse case that lead to the death of a six month old infant. I chose another country that follows the child abuse theme. The song tells a story of a little girl that is abused  and even with clear physical signs everyone turns their back as if it's not happening.

Newspaper

Christian group slams Obama salute to gay dads

President Obama giving his support to families that have two fathers on Father's Day. Religion, family, politics, and homosexuality all in one article gets very controversial and hard to defend one side.

Visual

Ellen DeGeneres announcing the engagement to long time girlfriend Portia De Rossi. In the spotlight of the media, even celebrities still live out their controversial lifestyles for everyone to observe.
Video

This video is very graphic and can be very disturbing. This is a very severe child abuse case against an infant from her own family for her entire short life of 6 months.

Websites
This website is a very good information place for different religions. If you're interested to know about a religion, then you click on a button and it gives an outline for that religion.

I really like this website for a reference to children of broken homes. This website provides kids with information on how to deal with divorce. This website also has other important subjects like health, safety tips, feelings.

Lyrics

"Concrete Angel"
By: Martina McBride

She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with the linen and lace, oh

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born

Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place
Where she's loved concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear but they turn out the light
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it will be too late

Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place
Where she's loved concrete angel

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place
Where she's loved concrete angel

Chapter 12: Sexuality

This chapter is by far my favorite to talk about. My family is very conservative on this subject so I'm not quite sure why I am so outspoken about this topic. There is many subgroups within this chapter that I wasn't able to include all of them in this blog. Sex is important at any age and you will see that being addressed in the video I posted. Gay rights have been a controversy for many years and will continue to be, but as you will read in the newspaper article things are beginning to change toward the more liberal side.
My visual represents probably most of my families views which are very shallow. I have several friends and individuals that I know are homosexual and I love them! I am full accepting of their choices and support them. The lyrics are from a country song that I have always loved but wasn't really sure what it was about. The more I researched it, I discovered it was about abortion. I believe this is a very touchy subject for most individuals especially in my very Christian family. I am a feminist and believe in pro-choice but don't ridicule others for having their beliefs.

Lyrics

"Red Ragtop"
By Tim McGraw

I was twenty and she was eighteen,
We were just as wild as we were green, in the ways of the world
She picked me up in that red rag top,
We were free of the folks and hiding from the cops,
On a summer night runnin’ all the red lights
We parked way out in a clearin’in a grove and the night
Was hot as a coal burnin’ stove,
We were cookin’ the gas we were had to last

In the back of that red rag top
She said please don’t stop

Well the very first time her mother met me,
Her green eyed girl was a mother to be for 2 weeks
I was out of a job and she was in school,
Life was fast and the world was cruel
We were young and wild, we decided not to have a child
So we did what we did and we tried to forget
And we swore up and down there would be no regrets
In the morning light,
But on the way home that night

On the back of that red rag top
She said please don’t stop..
Lovin’ me

We took one more trip around the sun,
It was all make believe in the end,
No I can’t say where she is today,
I can’t remember who I was, back then
Well you do what you do and you pay for your sins,
And there’s no such thing as what might’ve
Been, that’s a waste of time; drive you outta your mind
I was stopped at a red light just yesterday beside a young girl
In a cabriolet and her eyes
Were green
I was in an old scene

I was back in that red rag top
On the day she stopped
Loving me
I was back in that red rag top
On the day she stopped
Loving me

Chapter 11: Gender

The reason I chose this chapter because the term gender is so inappropriately used. There is a lot of assumption that women should be homemakers while men are the "bringing home the bacon." Times have changed since the 1940's and so has modern roles of men and women.
All of my supporting materials range from areas of feminism to support the rights of women, media influence on gender roles, and to dual labor and family. Patriarchy used to be a common thought in our society and still is in many parts of the world. Recent research has also suggested separating classrooms because learning styles of girls vs. boys is different and have seen improved test scores. The song lyrics are my favorite because it represents a gender character that is seen weak in men, but women think of it as sensitive and caring.

Newspaper

Teaching Boys and Girls Separately

This article describes fourth grade girls and boys being taught separately in classrooms. The article talks about how boys and girls learn different. More public schools are taking charge in separating co-ed classrooms and obtaining single-sex for each grade.

Visual

This picture is advocating a voice for women. This is during a period when patriarchy was in full swing.

This video demonstrates how the media is involved in gender stereotyping with the use of toys, kitchen products, toiletries, and even in the movies.

Internet Sites

The dual labor market theory website that defines common terms within this chapter. It ties really nicely with jobs affecting families with time and finances. The second one is  a website that has many topics regarding feminism. It has places to look for jobs, events that are being held, and what's going on in legislation.

Song Lyrics

"Boys Don't Cry"
The Cure

 I would say I'm sorry
If I thought that it would change your mind
But I know that this time
I've said too much
Been too unkind

I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
I try and
Laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
'cause boys don't cry
Boys don't cry

I would break down at your feet
And beg forgiveness
Plead with you
But I know that
It's too late
And now there's nothing I can do

So I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
I try to
laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
'cause boys don't cry

I would tell you
That I loved you
If I thought that you would stay
But I know that it's no use
That you've already
Gone away

Misjudged your limits
Pushed you too far
Took you for granted
I thought that you needed me more

Now I would do most anything
To get you back by my side
But I just
Keep on laughing
Hiding the tears in my eyes
'cause boys don't cry
Boys don't cry
Boys don't cry

Chapter 10: Race and Ethnicity

The reason I chose this chapter is because it's something that  we deal with everyday. America has a lot of diversity but it doesn't always mean that everyone lives in peace and harmony. My family is considered a mixed family. Both of my brothers are half Hispanic and Caucasian, my father is French-Canadian Indian, and my mother is German. The school I attended was half Hispanic and half  Caucasian and there was definitely a separation between the two ethnicities.
The newspaper article that I posted, describes a rape case in the 1940's when women and blacks didn't have rights. The picture of Martin Luther King Jr. portrays an important historical marking for our nation. I love history, so I posted some URL's that give and outlined description of the Civil Rights Movement and Operation Bootstrap in Puerto Rico. The poem sums up the chapter by declaring that if you don't see people's color then color-blind is seen by that person. We are who we are by everything in our lives, including our skin color. The word-search includes significant words from the chapter that represent race and ethnicity.

Newspaper Article

The article I chose from msnbc.com, Town leaders sorry for handling of 1944 rape case, is a very significant situation that represents racism during a time that hadn't yet brought the negative impacts to the perspective of our nation. This also brings up a period before women had the rights they do today.
Visual

This picture sums up so many emotions for the United States. Martin Luther King Jr. was a very significant figure that progressed his dreams into a reality for many individuals today.

Video Clip

There are several videos on this page that represent the race and ethnicity chapter. The one I really like is the second one of the page by Chimanda Adichie.

Internet Sites

The first website is giving the history of the American Civil Rights Movement and the second site is giving the history of Operation Bootstrap in Puerto Rico. These both are significant events that help shape our country into a more peaceful diverse nation. It has specific events that talks about Rosa Parks and Brown vs. Board of Education. In Operation Bootstrap, there are statistics that show employment within agriculture and manufacturing.

Poem

Behind the Color Blind
By Nordette Adams

You say you see no color.
I say you're full of it!
I hope when you look at me
you see black a little bit,
for when you say you see me
how can that really me
when part of who I am
is my ethnicity?

I like my hair, my skin tone,
I like my heritage;
It influences my art,
enriches how I live.
I like your hair and color
and even your eyes too,
one of my favorite hues is
that lovely shade of blue.

But I wouldn't want to be you,
I like myself just fine,
and don't want you to be me:
We'll both get there in time.
I know you like Scott Joplin,
and I love a Bernstein score,
I love good gumbo and pot pies,
one flavor'd be a bore.

When we escape these bodies,
and meet at heaven's gate,
then we can say "no color":
We'll have nothing to debate.
We'll be at peace in truth,
and understand all things,
but until then let's be real ...
Enjoy what difference brings!
And until that day in glory
when we are truly one,
let's love ourselves in color
not pretend that we see none.

Consider what it means
to love without condition,
it means to see all sides of me,
yet love is your decision.
To be high but lay down low,
and love beyond yourself
is the best way to love others,
and have spiritual wealth.
But to claim you see no color,
and smile like all is fine
is to say you don't see wholely
and if so, we see you're blind.
